Nix goes green

Nix Medical Center

Nix Medical Center

The Nix Medical Center, located downtown at 414 Navarro St., is undergoing a $2 million upgrade, including three new chiller units which are expected to reduce its carbon footprint.  The improvements are part of a plan to certify the 300,000 square-foot Nix hospital/medical office building as an Energy Star building.

The new system is expected to cut more than $100,000 from annual utility costs.  It is estimated that it will take fifteen years for the system to pay for itself but should last for at least thirty years.  The hospital hopes to take advantage of a CPS Energy rebate plan that will return $50,000 – roughly equivalent to one summer month’s electricity bill for the building.  For more information, read the press release and Nix upgrades to reduce energy usage (MySA.com, 1-7-10).
